The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS) and the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) present KOLAB, an Indo-Korean Music Collaboration Programme. This programme aims to foster cross-cultural music creation, bringing together 15 artists—10 from India and 5 from South Korean at the True School of Music, KOLAB seeks to blend diverse musical traditions, create original music, and build lasting artistic and industry connection.
RAGA2ROCK met up with Mr. Rakesh Nigam – CEO, The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS), a leading figure in the Indian music industry, along with Bunty Bains – Creative Director, his creative guidance, guiding these sessions.
R2R: What do you think of KOLAB, and how did the idea for it come about?
Rakesh Nigam – CEO (IPRS): IPRS has always been committed to supporting emerging talent, not just through royalty distribution but by providing platforms for artists to create and grow. KOLAB is a unique initiative we developed in collaboration with KOMCA, and the response has been tremendous. This programme lays a strong foundation for future growth, helping upcoming artists gain credibility while promoting collaboration between two distinct cultures—India and Korea—especially in the field of music. I am confident that KOLAB will continue to evolve, and as more people get involved, its impact will grow.
R2R: What drew you to KOLAB, and what do you think of the program?
Bunty Bains – Creative Director: KOLAB is an amazing initiative by IPRS and KOMCA, and as soon as I heard about it, I wanted to be involved. We received a huge number of applications, and selecting just ten Indian artists was tough because we wanted diverse voices from different states. Bringing in Korean artists too is brilliant – it creates a true fusion of two distinct cultures. I’m excited to see both Indian and Korean artists working with such passion, each giving their best to create something new. The energy here is phenomenal, and watching artists pour their hearts into music is inspiring.
R2R: How are you guiding the artists in their creative process?
Bunty Bains – Creative Director: These artists are exceptionally talented, both from India and Korea. When they arrived, we organized them into groups and encouraged them to create freely. There’s no strict structure; we’re allowing them to explore and innovate, which makes for a more genuine collaboration. My role here is to guide and support their journey, but it’s really about their own creativity and discoveries. Working alongside them, I’m thrilled with what they’re achieving, and they’re creating some truly powerful pieces.
Rakesh Nigam – CEO (IPRS): It’s incredible to witness such a high level of talent. The creative guidance provided by Mr. Bunty Bains and Mr. Mayur Puri has been invaluable as they help these artists explore and innovate. We have allowed the process to be free flowing, without restrictions, so the artists can truly express their creativity. Both the Indian and Korean participants are giving their best, and IPRS is proud to offer them this stage to fully explore their potential.
R2R: Can we expect a hit song from KOLAB?
Bunty Bains – Creative Director: KOLAB is all about giving emerging artists a platform and nurturing the creative process. As artists, we focus on the authenticity of music rather than just chasing hits. If a song connects with people, that’s fantastic, but here it’s about creating music that comes from a place of real passion. We’re looking forward to many incredible songs, but it’s quality and originality that truly matter.
R2R: How do you view the live music industry in India, especially regarding creators’ earnings and licensing?
Rakesh Nigam – CEO: The live music industry is vital for creators; it’s not only a source of income but also a way to connect with audiences. However, the industry remains fragmented, and the current licensing structure doesn’t adequately benefit creators, especially regional artists. For a sustainable future, it’s essential that the industry unites to ensure creators are fairly compensated and that their intellectual property rights are protected. As music lovers, we can show our support by promoting fair practices and industry-wide collaboration to safeguard the interests of all creators.
R2R: Any advice for music listeners and upcoming artists in India?
Bunty Bains – Creative Director: For music lovers, keep supporting artists and their work; your encouragement makes a big difference. To all upcoming artists, I’d say, stay curious and don’t restrict yourself. Regional music is gaining recognition globally, and India’s rich culture and languages are a treasure trove of inspiration. Keep exploring and creating and aim to showcase your music to the world
