The Majuli Music Festival (MMF) is an annual event held on the beautiful island of Majuli in the Indian state of Assam. Established in 2019, the Majuli Music Festival Foundation will repeat the event in 2021 with the participation of more than 30 musicians from all around India. Previous years’ lineups included O Daapun, Jutimala and the Tai People, Madhouse Mongrels, Motherjane, Naalayak, The Midnight Taxi, and The Sleeping Satellite, as well as singers Bishrut Saikia, Doctor Lincoln, Joi Barua, Lucky Ali, Salman Elahi, and Trishna Gurung.
In addition to the performances, there are many other things to do in the area, such as bird watching, fishing, boating, camping, and visiting the Sri Sri Samaguri Satra, where locals and visitors alike may learn about the history and culture of mask creation in the region.
The farmers of Majuli are particularly at risk during the monsoon because of flooding and soil erosion. This is why sustainable practices were central to the planning of the festival. The bamboo used in the construction of the stages and other decorative elements comes from the surrounding community, and all of the installations are produced from repurposed materials.
