From Fields to Plates: The Revival of Millets for a Sustainable Tomorrow

In 2023, the United Nations officially recognized it as the International Year of Millets, thanks to a proposal put forth by the Indian Government, under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modiji. Millets, the age-old grains that have been an integral part of Indian diets for centuries, have received this well-deserved recognition for their immense health benefits and positive impact on the environment. Their resilience in the face of drought and extreme weather events makes them a sustainable choice for our planet.

Through the passage of time, millets had taken a backseat and were overshadowed by less nutritious grains such as wheat and rice. However, the need for millets has never been greater than it is now. As we battle lifestyle diseases and environmental challenges, this super crop emerges as a vital solution.

For the past eight years, I have been a fervent advocate of millets, recognizing their potential to transform lives and heal the planet. My journey took me to the heart of millet fields across India, particularly in the enchanting state of Odisha, where I had the privilege of learning from indigenous farmers about their time-honored growing techniques and the numerous benefits of millets.

One remarkable aspect of my journey was the collaboration with the tribal farmers, who not only possess profound agricultural wisdom but are also gifted musicians. Together, we crafted a captivating song, the ‘Mandia Song,’ dedicated to millets (or mandia in the local parlance). This song serves as an anthem for these super crops that have been cultivated by generations of farmers in Odisha.

Allow me to share with you this musical masterpiece, a fusion of culture and wisdom, in the short clip provided below:

Through the ‘Mandia Song,’ we aspire to inspire individuals from all walks of life to embrace millets and integrate them into our daily diets and consciousness. The power of music combined with the nourishment of millets holds the potential to bring about positive change in the lives of countless individuals.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik, whose pioneering efforts in reviving and promoting this traditional food have been instrumental in bringing millets back into our fields and plates. His visionary support has not only empowered farmers but has also contributed to the well-being of the masses.

Let us join hands in this endeavor to rejuvenate the age-old wisdom of millets and make a profound impact on our health and environment. As we embrace this super crop, we take a step closer to a healthier, more sustainable future.

Together, let us celebrate the International Year of Millets and embark on a journey towards a brighter, nourished, and harmonious world. Let the music of millets resonate far and wide, inspiring generations to come.
